You know you are in the city of luxury when every whiff of air that passes you is richly scented. The airport feels like a grand mall and Gold retails as casually as candy-shops.
A great "layover city", Dubai is perfect for a mid, 3 - 4 day break if you want a taste of Emirati lifestyle. The city has a bustling, cosmopolitan and chilled- out vibe. And the food scene is eclectic - name any reputable food-chain and you'll most likely find it here.
Just remember to plan in the winter - Nov end to Feb end is your best bet if you want to explore the city in night and in day - the city gets sweltering hot most of the other months. I visited it in Christmas break but would actually advise against it as Xmas to new-year is a crazy period to visit - with teeming crowds of tourists and residents alike. Go for January beginning if possible as that is the best time if you like it quieter, or early December to enjoy the merry scene minus the extensive crowds.
In my itinerary I covered central attractions like Top of Burj Khalifa, Miracle Garden, Souks, Al Seef and Al Fahidi district, and also planned for the one MUST DO attraction - desert night camping! I skipped the global village because I was short of time but if you are in Dubai longer, go for it!
As you can guess - Miracle Garden (and the butterfly garden). Top of Burj Khalifa and global village, all require tickets - so your best bet would be to pre-plan through viator or get-your-guide for tickets for these experiences to avoid surprises and most importantly queueing. Also do book your desert camping in advance to get your best picks as they are mighty popular in winters ( no surprises there!)
Now, first things first, where to stay?
I was visiting some friends so it made sense for me to stay close to the OUD METHA district . It's pretty much the heart of the food scene and every place is easily accessible from here - the FRAME, the MUSEUM and AL SEEF and AL FAHIDI are all like under 15 minutes from here. Close to Dubai Creek, Bur Dubai, and Downtown, this is a quieter, residential area with excellent metro links to Downtown Dubai, DIFC, and the beaches — ideal if you want a central base without the high prices of more touristy zones. Hyatt is an excellent option located right by Oud Metha. However, choose to stay near the Marina for the city vibes, JBR for the beach, and if chasing the ultra luxe feel, go all out for Burj Al Arab Jumeirah or Armani Hotel Burj Khalifa. Going from Ultra to Budget, here's some recommendations-
££££ Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is the ultimate luxury stay in Dubai — the iconic 7-star style hotel on its own island with stunning Arabian architecture, world-class service, and unforgettable views.
££££ Armani Hotel Dubai is a sleek 5-star property inside the Burj Khalifa, offering elegant design, direct access to The Dubai Mall, and a stylish, sophisticated atmosphere for discerning travellers. (The view at the top comes free here)
£££ JA Ocean View Hotel sits right on JBR The Walk, offering spacious rooms, sea views, and easy access to beach activities and waterfront dining — a great mid-range choice for beach lovers.
££ Rove Downtown is a fun, mid-range hotel with modern rooms and a great location near the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa — ideal if you want comfort and convenience without breaking the bank.

Day 1
Start the morning in Dubai slowly with a delectable breakfast accompanied by sweet dates and fragrant Arabic tea. There’s something grounding about this ritual, and I quickly decided it would be my daily habit here.
By mid-morning, we headed to the Miracle Garden - home to elaborate arches, heart-shaped tunnels, and whimsical sculptures made entirely in flowers. We spent over 3 hours here and still had parts we skipped. A quick stop was made to the adjacent Butterfly Garden which had young ones screaming in joy.
Lunch was a quick stop - do try the Thai coconut if you have a chance - its sooooo coconutty and creamy - its like a meal in itself.
As the afternoon softened, we headed to Dubai Mall. Electric energy, the smell of oud, glitz, glamour and gold - you get to see it all. The fountain show is a free joy not to be missed - magical, rhythmic, musical - a reminder that Dubai loves drama and does it well. Then watch as the city transforms from daylight to gold, from the unreal height of the Burj.
End the evening with a stroll and some more through JBR. Soak in the lively, relaxed atmosphere and the cool breeze.
Day 2
This day was all about the desert experience - post lazing by the kite beach, we were picked by our guide for this amazing experience. We did this tour and can't recommend it enough! (NO ADS). You can also reach this place yourself directly if you have a car - it's only about an hour and half from the city - it's called Al Marmoom and they have both Bedouin tents, and domes with private pools, which are the height of glamping with very fine, traditional activities like camel rides, henna painting, sword Yola dance and fire show, falcon and horse shows etc (no belly dancing and NO LIQUER). The buffet is a 5 star alfresco experience in itself. The sunset and the sunrise in the desert is ethereal. There was also a star-gazing and sheesha session included late night. And not to forget, the bathrooms were cleaner than 5 star hotel loos. There was free flowing Arabic tea and coffee of course - I can keep going on but you need to experience it for yourself.
We went with the get your guide tour because - A - we didn't know which camp to go to; B - we didn't have a car, and the pick up, drop off was heaven sent; and C - we also wanted to do Dune bashing and Sand Boarding which were included in our tour but wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Can't recommend the experience tour enough, seriously - it wasn't cheap but so well-worth the money.
AND IF you want to witness the ultimate luxury - check out this extravagant tour people rave about - The Nest by Sonara .
Day 3
After the surreal start of the day in the desert, the morning camel ride, the hot breakfast platters and sunrise - we reached our hotel by 10 am. Post freshening up, we headed for the Dubai Marina just after noon — the perfect time to see the city glinting under the sun.
We prebooked this tour . (NO AD)
Stepping aboard the yacht felt instantly indulgent. As we cruised through the marina, glass towers rose on either side, their reflections rippling across the water. Lunch was an irresistible BBQ — fresh, sizzling and best enjoyed with the sea breeze and uninterrupted views. Sailing past landmarks and luxury residences, Dubai flaunted its futuristic style, a city very aware of its own style-quotient. The architecture is truly remarkable and best enjoyed from the seaside -view.
By early evening, we headed in the opposite direction — back in time. We really wanted to know more about Emirati traditions and historical relevance of the district so we went for this inexpensive tour (highly recommend it) . This tour covered the districts, the history of museum ( no entry though), tea and the cultural significance around Arabic hospitality, spice souk and the gold souk, and even the pretty creek experience.
On the left, and below, are photos taken while crossing the creek on a traditional wooden boat, and feeding the seagulls
Al Seef welcomed us with winding walkways, heritage-style buildings, and lantern-lit courtyards hugging the edge of Dubai Creek. It felt cinematic, like a carefully preserved memory of old Dubai - which interestingly it is not! (Spoiler Alert - it is only 8 year old, fashioned in old style of neighbouring Al Fahidi district).
The market in Al Seef is really cool with lots of stuff to rummage through and some antique finds also. Lined with pretty bistros and cool cafes (especially the Starbucks here) you can spend hours here on your own ( and why shouldn't you ?)
A short walk away, the famous Al Fahidi Historical District offers a unique charm of its own — narrow lanes, coral-stone houses, wind towers, and hidden art spaces that whisper stories of traders, pearl divers, and families who once lived here. A famous textile market here offers hours of fun exploration for those who want to find such treasures.
When the sun dips, notice the golden light bring the textures of the old walls to life.
It is now that we crossed the creek to head to the Spice and Gold Souk.
The spice souk comes first. Needless to say - a strong scent of cinnamon, saffron and frankincense lingers in the air permanently. And the aroma of the herbs, the teas, and eucalyptus is captivating. But other than the nose, the eyes are also enticed by heaps and heaps oof spices, whole and powdered - like little ant hills in multi-colour- spread out through every street. It's a moment for the cameras.
And then comes the real Dubai bling - the Gold souk - you really have to see it to believe it - the teeming crowds and the commotion outside popular shops like Anwar and Joyalukkas makes you wonder if they are a gold or a goldfish shop!
There are literally outfits of gold on sale - and in 22K nonetheless. It is a must see spectacle!
On our drive back from the Souks, we passed by the Frame and the Dubai Museum of the Future. Definitely worth a visit if you are here longer !
Some honourable mentions that you could include in your itinerary (kid -friendly) if you have a longer stay:
♥️ View from Palm Jumeirah (instead of Burj Khalifa at the top)
♥️ Dubai Zoo and Aquarium
♥️ Global Village
Full Day Tours -
♥️ Abu Dhabi full day sight-seeing tour including entry to one World - Warner Bros OR Ferrari.
♥️ Full Day Al Ain conservation Oasis trip
Overnight Activities -
♥️ Yas Island overnight stay to cover all parks
♥️ Ras Al Khaimah desert, Jabal Jais peak and insight into Pearl diving. (overnight stay at desert)
Some top tips -
💋 Avoid PDA, it's not really a problem in Dubai but not appreciated.
📳Download Botim or get a international calling plan- Whatsapp calls don't work in Dubai, neither does facetime.
🚕Download Careem App (Uber is way more expensive - Careem is reliable, cheap and readily available)
👔Wear respectable clothing in religious areas, cover your shoulders and knees.
🫰Bargaining is the norm - just be polite and keep smiling while you indulge in it
👚Carry extra layers for your night at the desert as temperature drops by 5 degrees easily.
🪙If you really want to buy/invest in Gold, there's no better place than Dubai - do your research and look around before you decide on a shop - Souk shops offer a better rate than airport, and few shops also waiver the making charges which is a big win.
🫖Do try different teas if you are into herbal teas - they are fragrant and delectable! We bought little rose tea and later kicked ourselves on skimping out.
🛍️Don't forget shopping for Dates if you like them, go for Medjool dates from Bateel or if feeling indulgent, go for dates from the Qinwan store.
